Day of Action to Stop GM Alfalfa April 9 2013
Here's the gallery of photos from the actions, from (roughly) East to West! Thank you to everyone for participating in such positive and effective action!
On April 9 2013, people in 38 communities across Canada rallied as part of the Day of Action to Stop GM Alfalfa! The Day of Action was called for by the National Farmers Union - Ontario and supported by the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network.
At noon, outside federal Member of Parliament constituency offices, government and corporate offices in 17 communities in Ontario, and 21 locations in other provinces! Rallies in Ontario: Barrie, Belleville, Brantford, Goderich, Guelph, Hawkesbury, Kingston, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Orangeville, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Port Colborne, Stratford, Toronto, Thunder Bay, Welland. Rallies in other provinces: Wolfville NS, Moncton NB, Montreal PQ, Lévis PQ, Brandon MB, North Battleford SK, Camrose AB, Calgary AB, Edmonton AB, Grande Prairie AB, Red Deer AB, Duncan BC, Kamloops BC, Kelowna BC, Langley BC, Nelson BC, Smithers BC, Vancouver BC, Vernon BC, Victoria BC, Whitehorse YT. Plus: Film Night, April 9 in Winnipeg.
Many people met with their Member of Parliament on April 9 or after - presenting petitions that will be presented in the House of Commons. There were children in costume, organic cake (yum!), lambs bounding around, great signs, haybales and lots of good will, courage and determination! Take a look! Join the movement! PEI Frankenfish Tourism 2013: CBAN and PEI group hosts international visitors (April, May)
US company AquaBounty wants to produce all the proposed GM salmon eggs at their research facility in PEI.
On May 13, 2013 Michael Hansen, Senior Scientist at Consumers Union spoke in PEI at an event organized by CBAN and the PEI group Islanders Say No to Frankenfish. On May 16 he and government delegates from countries across the world visited the AquaBounty facility in Bay Fortune PEI.
On April 17 and 18, 2013 CBAN and the PEI group Islanders Say No to Frankenfish hosted a PEI visit from Alaskan State Representative Geran Tarr. Rep. Tarr met with the Premier, Opposition members, and spoke at a public event.
Farmer GM Alfalfa Protest, Ontario, Oct 2012
On October 24, 2012, 120 farmers and supporting consumers protested industry plans to pave the way for GM alfalfa in Ontario. Farmers gathered outside an industry meeting that was designing a "coexistence" plan for GM alfalfa."No Way! No GM Hay"
Atlantic Canada: Events to Stop GM Altantic Salmon Oct 2011
October 24-27, 2011, CBAN and local groups coordinated public forums in Charlottetown, Fredericton, Halifax and St. John's, with experts from the United States. "Genetically Modified Atlantic Salmon: Atlantic Canada is at the centre of the global controversy over GM fish".

Rally to Stop "Enviropig", Feb 2011
On February 9, 2011, students, farmers and consumers rallied at the University of Guelph in Ontario. Over 100 people braved -16C to say no to the genetically engineered pig developed at the university, called "Enviropig". The final vote on Bill C-474 happened that day AND Members of Parliament were on the Guelph campus...See some great photos for inspiration. The Enviropig project was closed in April 2012 thanks to CBAN's campaign and this grassroots resistance.
Haitian Farmers Protest Monsanto's Seed Donation, June 4 2010
Around 10,000 Haitian peasant farmers marched Friday June 4 to protest Monsanto's donation of 475 tones of hybrid corn and vegetable seeds. See pictures here from Haiti as well as from Solidarity actions in Montreal and Seattle. Haiti's farmers asked groups around the world to show solidarity and “Struggle Against Monsanto and its associates.” For more information on the Haitian farmer call for solidarity and for more information on Monsanto click here.
CBAN organized a solidarity action in Montreal with Union Paysanne (member of CBAN and Via Campesina), Action SOS Haiti, and Haiti One Seed One Land. A delegation of 4 met with the Consul General of Haiti in Montreal for half an hour to discuss the issue. There was also a solidarity action in Seattle.
La Via Campesina Solidarity Action
On November 8th, 2007, CBAN coordinated actions with Members in Montreal, Ottawa and Arva Ontario to denounce the killing of a Via Campesina organizer in Brazil by militia on Syngenta-owned land while protesting genetic engineering with 200 other farmers.
