GE Trees
CBAN is a Steering Committee Member of the North American STOP GE Trees Campaign and is working with groups across the world in the call for a ban on GE Trees.
In 2008, CBAN worked with our partners from across the world at the at the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity to try and achieve an international ban on GE trees. African Governments proposed a suspension of all field trials and plantings of GE trees but Canada, Colombia and Brazil fought to stop it.
The campaign is critical at this time because GE trees research is being propelled forward at breakneck speed due to speculation of the role GE trees could play as an agrofuel, for cellulosic ethanol.
At the Ninth Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Milan in 2003, genetically engineered trees were approved for use in plantations created to offset carbon emissions as a part of the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism.
