The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food has approved changes to Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regulatory guidance that, along with similar changes permitted by the Minister of Health in May of 2022, allow product developers to assess the safety of their own genetically modified (GM or genetically engineered) seeds and foods without government oversight.

First Canadian Case of Insect Resistance to Genetically Engineered Corn Discovered

June 10, 2019. In Nova Scotia, corn farmers are observing that the European corn borer, an insect pest, has developed resistance to the genetically engineered (genetically modified or GM) trait designed to kill it. This is the first report in the world of the European corn borer developing resistance to a genetically engineered trait used to confer insect resistance. It is also the first report in Canada of any insect pest developing resistance to a genetically engineered trait.

Groups Urge Canada to Reject New U.S. Example of GM Food Labelling

December 21, 2018. Canadian public interest and environmental groups are expressing concerns about inadequate and confusing new U.S. government rules to label some genetically modified (GM, genetically engineered) foods, and are calling on the federal government to reject this new U.S. example and adopt full, transparent mandatory labelling instead.
