Enjeux
Agrocarburants
Corporate Control
The markets for genetically engineered (also called genetically modified or GM) crops are dominated by six seed and agrochemical companies. The high level of corporate concentration in the seed market has already meant higher prices, limited choices for farmers, a narrowing of genetic diversity in crops, and stagnating innovation.
Environmental Impacts
The early warnings of environmentalists about the negative impacts of genetically engineered plants are, unfortunately but inevitably, being proven correct. In addition to ongoing concerns about the impact of GM insect resistant (Bt) crops on soil ecosystems and non-target insects we see the following serious problems.
Feeding the World
CBAN’s final report in the GMO Inquiry 2015 examines the claim that we need genetically modified crops (and animals) to address global hunger and provide enough food for a growing population.
GE Free Zones
Our definition of a GE Free Zone is a municipality or group of municipalities that has passed a resolution against genetically engineered (GE) crops and animals within its jurisdiction.
Golden Rice
“Golden Rice” is the name of a rice that has been genetically modified (GM, or genetically engineered) to produce betacarotene, which the body can convert into vitamin A. This beta-carotene gives the rice grains the yellowish colour that has inspired its name.
Monsanto
Monsanto is the largest seed company in the world (accounted for 29% of the world’s commercial seed market in 2013 – ETC Group) and owns the seed planted on over 80% of the GE crop acres in the world.
New GE technologies
The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text.
Patents
“Intellectual property” refers to a group of laws – such as patents, Plant Breeders’ Rights, copyright, trademarks and trade secrets – intended to protect inventors and artists from losing control over their intellectual creations/ideas. Intellectual property has become a powerful tool for corporations to create monopolies and consolidate market power.
Pesticides
The term “pesticides” includes herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. The industry promised that genetically modified (GM) crops would reduce the use of pesticides in farming. Instead, herbicide use has increased with the use of GM crops.
Regulation
Genetically engineered (also called genetically modified or GM) crops were first approved in Canada in 1995 without public debate. There is no labelling of GM foods on grocery store shelves and there is no consultation with the public before new GM foods are approved.
Terminator Technology
There is an international moratorium on Terminator technology (seeds that are genetically engineered to be sterile after harvest). Brazil and India have national bans on Terminator technology but the industry is actively working to make Terminator legal in Brazil.
